R&B GENRE

Evolving out of jump blues in the late '40s, R&B laid the groundwork for rock & roll.. Eventually, R&B metamorphosed into soul, which was funkier and looser than the pile-driving rhythms of R&B. Soul came to describe a number of R&B-based music styles. During the first part of the '60s, soul music remained close to its R&B roots. Contemporary R&B developed after years of urban R&B. Like urban, contemporary R&B is slickly produced, but many of the musicians are obsessed with bringing the grit, spirit, and ambitiousness of classic soul back to contemporary soul and R&B.

FASHION

-JEANS: along with the minimal clothing, male artists tend to

wear jeans slightly hanging off their hip to reveal their boxers. This is to make them seem arousing and also sexualises them. During the music video the audience will view a few close up shots of their body to entice them even more. In addition, the artist tends to wear a designer belt, which will also be shown in a close up usually and done as a form of advertisement.

-TATTOOS: male artists mostly have tattoos, which adds to their masculine portrayal.

-JEWELLERY: R&B artist wear subtle jewellery such as an earring, a watch, a simple chain. However, heavy jewellery is something key that male hip-hop artists tend to wear. This is to seem flashy and stand out as a wealthy artist.

MEN

They usually have dark eye makeup, eyeliner and golds in their eyeshadow to make their character seductive. Sometimes females wear, red lipstick which again portrays them as characters for lust and pashion but also empowers them as a figure of danger.

-JEWELLERY: Big earrings, necklaces, for example: this picture of Keri Hilson but usually when they wear a lot of necklaces they are breaking gender stereotypes because it is usually R&B males that wear that much jewellery.

iconography

Females in R&B also convey their sexuality through their clothing which is very minimal as mentioned in their fashion; they also place emphasis on their sexuality through their makeup. But nowadays there has been a lot of gender stereotypes being broken in their videos with the females being seen as more powerful than the men for example Ciara’s "Like A Boy" music video.

pop genre

The songs usually include beats that are very dance-orientated.They stereotypically are associated with people in their teens as many people in their youth enjoy partying and clubbing and dancing, which is exactly what the purpose of pop music is for. A lot of the imagery created is base on sex or partying as this is stereotypically what teens enjoy.
