INTERTEXTUALITY IN KATY PERRY-LAST FRIDAY NIGHT AND IGGY AZALEA-FANCY
Goodwin’s Theory:
• Music videos demonstrate genre characteristics.
• There is a relationship between lyrics and visuals.
• There is a relationship between music and visuals.
• The demands of the record label will include the need for lots of close ups of the artist so that the artist may develop motifs.
• There is frequent reference to the notion of looking (screens within screens, telescopes etc.) and particularly the voyeuristic treatment of women’s bodies.
• There are often intertextual references to films, TV programmes, other music videos etc.
Both music videos focus on the target audience of young teenage girls. They have both chosen 'Clueless' to intertextualise in their product to make more of an appeal to their alike target audience. However, they both would appeal to a secondary audience of much of a much older group as they would probably recognise scenes form the music video in films they have watched before.
The main intertextual reference in the video is to the film Clueless. The video acts almost as a modern remake of the film featuring Iggy Azalea as the main character. The props and costumes fit in with the 90’s style of the movie.Clueless was partly to do with consumerism and the glamourous lifestyle of the Beverly Hills teens which fits perfectly into the themes of the track. Also the 90s retrospective that is currently influencing music and fashion is being exploited.

'Fancy' takes a scene from 'Clueless' and imitates the costume and performance from it. This will enhance its popularity, joining with fans from Clueless as they will find this recognisable and enjoy watching the music video as its something exciting for them.Azalea’s yellow tartan outfit is key to people recognising the connection between the film Clueless and the music video.

The video opens with a title screen that mirrors that from Clueless and also establishes the theme for the video.

The music video recreates scenes from Clueless too. The video almost acts as a modern remake of the film. This is an example from the music video and the film.
The music video of 'Last Friday Night' includes a combination of narrative and performance, with elements of pastiche and clear Intertextual references throughout. It closely follows the conventions expected by Andrew Goodwin. The music video is a pastiche of previous films, particularly teen films. The director himself states that he paid homage to Sixteen Candles (a famous teen 80’s film) as inspiration for the video.
Last Friday Night has a film like effect to it with the use of credits at the start and ending of the video. The music video also includes a remake of the popular social networking site 'Facebook' as 'Friendplace'. In addition, all the characters are wearing 80s style clothing, representing the fun and exciting pop genre.

The video can also be seen as replicating scenes from other teen films. An example of this is when Katy Perry walks down the stairs in slow motion, this imitates the scene in Mean Girls where Lindsey Lohan, walks down the stairs in her party outfit. Both these scenes replicate each other as both characters have had some sort of transformation.

The video also has many intertextual references, which are a convention of music videos. It contains cameos from other famous stars and pays homage to their celebrity image. An example of this is the inclusion of Rebecca Black who greets Katy Perry at the door and released another song about “Friday”. The intertextual references continues the homage to the 80’s with the inclusion of 80’s teen stars Debbie Gibson (as her mother) and Corey Haim (her father).

Katy Perry replicates Ugly Betty in this music video. This is representative of the teenage life of blossoming into a beautiful girl.
